Child Found Unresponsive in Swimming Pool

On Friday, 07 July 2017 at 4:40 PM deputies were dispatched to 78 Austin Store Road in Covington regarding a 2 ½ year old juvenile who had possibly drowned in a swimming pool.

Upon deputies’ arrival, it was reported the child was staying with his grandparents. At some point, he apparently exited the residence undetected. Once the grandparents discovered he was missing, they, along with other grandchildren, began to search the area.

An eleven year old juvenile cousin located the child floating in a swimming pool behind a neighboring residence. The grandfather reported he immediately removed the child from the pool and returned to his residence at 61 Austin Store Road to call 911. A neighbor began CPR until members of the Covington Fire Department made the scene and assumed life saving measures.

The child was transported via ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital Tipton and later transferred to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition. He died early this morning. An autopsy is being performed at the Regional Forensics Center in Memphis and the case remains under investigation.

“This is certainly a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with this family and their neighborhood” said Sheriff J.T. “Pancho” Chumley.
